The Gorgens Trust Vegetable Farm in Philippi decided to be one step ahead and built phase 1 of their 61kWp agricultural Solar System in Philippi.
The Gorgens Trust chose the superior optimising technology SolarEdge!
- Electricity yields of up to 25% higher, compared to traditional string inverters
- Free, module-level, real-time monitoring for minimum downtime
- Warranties of 25 years on the optimisers and 20 years on the inverter. Minimum maintenance costs!
One of the first: an Agricultural Solar System in Philippi

300kWp Agricultural Solar System in Philippi, Cape Town
226 Solar Modules, 113 SolarEdge optimisers and 2 SolarEdge inverters with 27.6kWp each. We estimate this PV System to produce over 100,000 kWh per annum, resulting in a total saving of over ZAR 100,000 per annum (2017).
The Gorgens Trust Vegetable Farm will participate in the City of Cape Town SSEG (Small Scale Embedded Generation) Scheme. Participating in this scheme ensures that no Solar Power is wasted and the owner gets a credit on his electricity bill for every kWh, he is feeding into the public grid (November 2017: 68ct ex VAT). For commercial customers there is no additional charge to join this scheme!
Additionally, Gorgens Trust Vegetable Farm makes use of the tax incentive, where the Solar System can be depreciated by 100% of the marginal tax rate within the first 3 years.
Taking all of this into consideration, the RoI is being pushed to less than 4 years. After those 4 years the Gorgens Trust Vegetable Farm will enjoy running their Farm on free electricity for at least 20 more years.
